Nic\u00e9phore Ni\u00e9pce’s imperfect\/unclear\/blurred heliograph, \u2018View from the Window at Le Gras\u2019, was the most technically perfect photograph on the entire globe at the time of its creation and undoubtedly the best photograph in many thematic categories, from landscape, social, architectural and technical photography to scientific, reportage and any other subject.<\/p>

There will probably never be another photograph honoured to such a wide extent. Perhaps the last photograph taken by a human being will have a chance to repeat this success.<\/p>

On the other hand, the same heliograph, devoid of memory, shown without a caption or context, seen by someone for the first time, may remind them more of paper stained with soot than one of the greatest achievements in the history of human civilisation, but it is this blurred, almost illegible heliotype stands at the beginning of man’s fascinating adventure with images written with light.<\/p>

Our fast telephoto lenses, bright steel lenses and other wonderful lenses, analogue bodies like Swiss watches, digital bodies like racing car cockpits and those cute compact cameras, purring dreamily in our pockets, always ready to play until the last ampere in the battery runs out, and of course smartphones, and cinema as a whole, it all began when it became clear to Niepce that the image of the view from the window in Le Gras, exposed for many hours, did not disappear and would not disappear, and was permanent.<\/p>

On the day the first permanent heliograph was made, just after sunset, Nic\u00e9phore lit the lamp and, in the flickering light of the flame, checked once again whether the image on the plate still told the story of what had happened a few hours earlier. Nothing had changed. He smiled. He had it in his hand. He had proof that at 5 p.m. that day, the world really was there, and he could even show what that world looked like a few hours earlier. No one had ever been able to perform such an impartial verification before. That evening, the day ceased to pass irretrievably.<\/p>

I remember those faint, summer-preserved paper corpses of failed photographs, which I tore up and threw away, erasing the traces of my own incompetence. Those that made it to the dryer and survived despite their imperfections were the result of a decision to \u2018save\u2019 them because of the shadow of information and emotional context they contained.<\/p>

The context of these few photos I have kept remains clear to a small group of people and will cease to exist along with their memory. Without a clear context, their value will decline, these photographs will become nameless, and their low quality in terms of the information they convey will mean that, being illegible, they will one day be destroyed, unless someone keeps such a silent photo for themselves.<\/p>

I remember when I was a kid, my grandmother, the one from the mountains, would chase us around on All Souls’ Day to clean up and light candles in a small cemetery of Austrian soldiers who died during the battle in World War I. We knew little about this battle, and even less about the fallen soldiers, their often nameless graves blurring into the ground, blurred and illegible, yet illuminated by lights not much less than the neighbouring parish cemetery, which is an important part of my imagination.
